Preposition Combinations Part 1


1.       I strongly believe in a communicative approach to teaching ESL. 

I would like to believe in a bright future in Canada.

I believe in angels.



I believe my grandfather’s stories about witches.



2.      The nurses cared for the bomb victims.

Today everybody should care about the environment for future generations.

Would you care for another drink?

I always care about all the different aspects of my children’s lives.

Everyone needs to care about their hygiene to stay in good health.



3.      He contributes to many charities.

Obesity can contribute to cardiovascular disease.

Parents should contribute to their children’s intellectual development.

Charitable organizations contributed to the Christmas party for orphan(ed) children.



4.      He was distinguished from the other boys by his height.

It is good to have the sense to distinguish good from evil.

I can’t distinguish male squirrels from female ones.

It’s so easy to distinguish Canadian people from newcomers by their accents.



5.      Only 10% of American adults engage in regular exercise.

If two people are engaged, they have agreed to marry. Kate's engaged to Mark.

In every culture before marriage, people have to be engaged to someone.

I’ve been engaged in the LINC English course for the last three months.



6.      Rick has always excelled at/in foreign languages.

My father has always excelled in remembering phone numbers.

It was an excellent idea to take English at Mohawk College.



7.      Joe's quite fond of her, isn't he?

My son is very fond of making mistakes at school.

Mohammed is fond of classical music.

I’m fond of ballet.

I’m fond of playing soccer.



8.     I've tried to forgive him for what he said.

I forgave my daughter for not tidying up her room last weekend.

Kamran forgives but doesn’t forget.

The teacher has tried to forgive his students for what they said about him.



9.      He was jealous of his friend’s success.

Why are you so jealous of his success?



10.   If you take your medications regularly, you will be protected from a heart attack.

Are we doing enough to protect the environment from toxic materials?

My valuables are protected from theft in my safety deposit box.



11.    Relying on money won’t always solve your problems/ be a solution.

Thomas relies on his older brother to finish/complete his math homework.

You always need someone to rely on.

There are people who rely on someone else to accomplish their goals.

I knew I could rely on David.



12.  The rescue teams have to rescue wild animals from the flood.

My dad tried to rescue me from drowning.

Sometimes, doctors rescue patients from death.



13.  I substitute fish for meat in my diet.

The recipe says you can substitute yoghurt for the sour cream.

You can never substitute love for money.

Parents can never be substituted for friends.



14.   I will succeed in my ESL course.

If you want to succeed in life, you need to be careful/cautious.

She wanted to be the first woman to climb Mount Everest, and she almost succeeded.

Until now, scientists haven’t succeeded in treating cancer totally.
